At KEPS our primary goal and purpose is to provide specialized training and education to Field Biologists, their companies, land managers and the general public.

The focus of the specialized training and education will be with insects and other invertebrates and selected species of birds within the Region.  We will use KEPS as a forum to bring to life the huge value insects and other invertebrates have to humans both directly and indirectly and that they are just not 'bugs'.

This specialized training and education will take many forms from blogs, downloadable educational documents, public programs through resources such as preserved lands or facilities, training webinars, field training and education, in house company training, KEPS office training and mentoring.  Not all of these programs will be implemented right away but gradually allowing comfort an ease to those wanting this training and education.

We currently provide some programs to Field Biologists and the general public. We conduct a program called, "Insects and Night" at Blue Sky Ecological Preserve in Poway and Wright's Field in Alpine. This is open to the general public including families.  We encourage you to go the Blue Sky and Back Country Land Trust Websites regularly to see when these programs will given annually.  Programs will be conducted at both locations in August 2014. Please contact the Blue Sky personnel and Back Country Land Trust for Details.

Another program we have offered for years to Field Biologists, land managers has been the San Diego Sensitive Butterfly Workshop.  This is a one day intense program discussing up to 5 sensitive butterflies in San Diego and we provide a Workshop booklet that talks about 9 sensitive butterflies within the San Diego Region. This Workshop is classroom training and does not replace field training.  However, it does augment a person's training and the Workshop booklet has valuable photos and references to assist the participant in their research.

We began in 2013 field training for coastal California gnatcatcher and will provide this training going forward.  We also provided field training for 6 of the nine sensitive butterflies from the Workshop as well as training to prepare a biologist for the Federal government's Quino Checkerspot exam.  With all of the training programs we do not and cannot guarantee any of the field time being used for the permit requirements needed for the Service's permit.  Our desire is that they will allow some of the training to be used as part of the required field time.  However, as regional experts for these species we know that you will be a much better biologist on these species.  We will discuss these programs on later pages.
